KARLIE + TRAVIS | ELOPEMENT IN ALASKA
Honestly, I can't even look at one of these images without feeling tears forming. The simplest of weddings are our favorites, the ones that are free of schedules, agendas, lists, and to-dos. They're our favorites because we get to focus on the couple, and only the couple, and just document their story and their love as best as we can. We get to fully be artists and friends and nothing more. We're not coordinators, planners, or hustlers, we're just us.
Karlie and Travis gifted us not only with that, but with an adventure unlike anything we've ever experienced.
We had a slow morning, eating snacks in the kitchen, the four of us (plus Bennie in my belly), as Karlie got her makeup and hair done. There was a perfect chill in the air, and a few little fog clouds floating in the mountains. In separate bedrooms, the pair of them got dressed, and Trav walked out to the trail to wait to see his bride, fully decked. Emotional and beautiful, they hugged on that little path as Karlie tried to compose herself. We think Travis welled up a little too but he was maybe a little too tough to admit it:) They gushed all over each other and we made our way to the car.
We made a quick stop by the river, not just any river, but the most gorgeous, white-capped wonder I've ever seen. Seriously every part of Alaska is like that, you'll pull over and see a completely different landscape and wonder how you're in the same place you just were. It's like eight different countries in one massive state. We just let those two love on each other by the hypnotic water, nature's white noise making us all feel calm and at ease. But the anticipation of becoming husband and wife was growing by the minute, so we got the hell back in that car and made our way to the magic that is Hatcher's Pass.
The bumpy little drive was a non-stop camera shooting out the window fest. We listened to Foy Vance and oohed and ahhed every two minutes at our view. There was a misty rain starting to roll in and we pulled off to get out and hike to their elopement spot. On the way we all stopped and popped the most delicious little berries in our mouth and found a spot that was not only perfect, but was geo-tagged so they would be able to go back whenever they want and stand on that special ground. The rain was kind of annoying at the time, but the little specks of water that showed up on camera were so magical, and it only added to the memory of those moments to remember that spitting rain on our faces. We spent the next few hours in glee, exploring Hatcher's pass with the newlyweds. Tourists yelling prayers and congratulations whenever we stopped for photos, dancing to Foy Vance with my sad little cell phone speaker, warming up in the car while Karlie took every selfie possible with her new husband...every moment was actual perfection and every one of them sticks out in my memory.
We ended our perfect day at the most delicious little greek restaurant in Palmer, sharing a meal and a few more moments together, just us four. I cannot express the feelings I have towards these lifelong friends of ours, their perfect union, and how connected I feel to the work and editing and style that we produced from this day. We are so proud of what we made for these two and so honored that they let us do it. It's hard to imagine that it can get better from here, but I have every confidence that this is only the start of more magical days to come.
